Why did we name our company Sagacity?
Why did we name our company Sagacity?
“Saga City? Sa jay city”? Am I saying that right?”
Me: “Well, it’s suh-gas-i-tee”
That’s how most of the conversations go when I’m introducing someone to our company for the first time.
To be fair, I had never seen the word prior to founding the company. And yet, two years later, I still think it’s the perfect name for our company.
Do you have sagacity?
Does your firm have sagacity?
Why are we called Sagacity?
Let’s break it down, understand its origins, and explore why it holds particular relevance for venture capitalists - today more than ever.
What Does Sagacity Mean?
Sagacity (pronounced suh-gas-i-tee) is derived from the Latin word sagacitas, which means keen perception or discernment. It’s the ability to make sound judgments, to see through the noise, and to understand the nuances of complex situations. In essence, sagacity is wisdom in action.
The Origins of the Word Sagacity
Tracing back to its Latin roots, sagacitas originally referred to a kind of sharpness, like that of a hunting dog with a keen sense of smell. Over time, it evolved to describe a person who possesses sharp mental faculties—a thinker who can assess situations deeply and come to wise conclusions.
Sagacity in the Context of Venture Capital
In the context of Venture Capital, sagacity is about having more information AND using that information to guide decision making.
There is naturally less data available on companies operating in the early stages of the private market compared to later stage, PE and public companies… However, there IS still data, and leveraging the insights in that data may mean the difference between a positive, neutral or negative outcome.
And that’s why we exist – to collect, organize and display that tough-to-get data, in a way that gives firms access to instant insights, and the decision making KPIs they need – right at their fingertips, as soon as it’s available.
In today's highly competitive era of venture, the best firms are leveraging every advantage possible - you might say, they have sagacity ;)
